WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?
A Dental Implant is the closest replacement to a natural, functioning tooth and is a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth. It involves placing a titanium post into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant has fused to the bone over a short period, it builds a strong foundation for a replacement tooth such as a crown, bridge or denture to be placed on top of the Implant foundation. Dental Implants can be performed under local anaesthetic or dental sedation options are available for those patients who may be experiencing some anxiety about the procedure. Sedation can help you feel calm and comfortable throughout the procedure, ensuring it is a stress-free experience.
WHY REPLACE MISSING TEETH?
Replacing missing teeth is important to maintain a healthy functioning smile and maintain a youthful appearance. The gaps which are left from missing teeth, increases the susceptibility to bone loss, gum disease and ultimately puts pressure and strain on neighbouring teeth, as well as affecting the bite.
Ignoring missing teeth can make it difficult to chew food, and can affect the alignment of the teeth, as teeth will try and fill the void. Another result of missing teeth is experiencing jaw problems due to an uneven distribution of pressure. Without the support from the teeth, the facial muscles may sag, giving a sunken appearance and this ultimately affects an individual’s self-esteem and confidence.
There are various options to replace missing teeth, including Dental Implants which is considered the gold standard, therefore replacing missing teeth is significant in preserving the structure and health of the teeth, gums and jawbone and facial structures.

WHY CONSIDER DENTAL IMPLANTS TO REPLACE MISSING TEETH
There are various reasons you may consider dental Implants, and they are all personal to each individual, although here are some of the most common reasons:
Difficulties chewing and eating
For people with missing teeth, or struggling with a current prosthetics such as a dentures or a bridge, there may be limitations to the foods eaten and can have a huge impact on the quality of life and enjoyment of food itself. If you avoid certain foods because of pain and discomfort and make alternative choices, dental implants may be a consideration.
Appearing older than your age
Missing teeth can create a sunken look, causing the cheeks to sag, and this is based on the bone loss which occurs after a tooth is lost, therefore dental implants may be something to consider, to regain that youthful appearance.
Self-conscious of your current smile
A major factor is being self-conscious and not confident to smile or talk, and actively hide away from social situations and photos, therefore dental implants may be something to consider.
Current dentures or bridges becoming a nuisance
If you are currently experiencing difficulties with a denture falling out, or becoming loose and relying on dental adhesive, or a bridge that keeps failing and needing to be recemented, then dental implants may be an option to consider.
DENTAL IMPLANT OPTIONS
There are various options when replacing missing teeth with Dental Implants:
1. Single Tooth Implant:
Single Implants are used to replace a single missing tooth, and the one implant supports the one crown.
2. Implant-Supported Bridge:
An implant supported bridge is often an option for when multiple teeth are missing in an area, and three or four teeth can be supported by only two implants.
3. Full Arch Rehabilitation:
Replaces an entire arch with a fixed bridge or removable denture and is supported by 4–8 implants.
FULL ARCH REHABILITATION
Full arch rehabilitation is a treatment approach used to restore a full lower or upper arch of teeth, or even both arches. It is typically performed for those patients who are edentulous (missing all teeth in one arch) or have severely compromised teeth that need to be replaced. Full arch rehabilitation offers a long term, fixed and permanent solution. There are two options of full arch rehabilitation, including a fixed bridge or a removable denture. They are both permanent and fixed solutions in the sense of having the implants integrated in the jawbone, but in regard to the prosthetics on the top, a bridge is fixed, where as an implant retained denture can be removed.
FULL ARCH OPTIONS
Fixed Bridge / Teeth in a day
Involves placing 4 to 6 dental implants per arch, allowing a fixed bridge to be placed on the top. This often allows immediate loading on the day of surgery with a temporary prosthesis. You may hear this being referred to, as ‘teeth in a day’ or ‘all-on-4/6’.
Removable Denture
This involves placing 2-4 implants per arch, allowing the denture to be clicked in place and offer a lot more stability than traditional dentures.
IMPLANT DENTURE VS TRADITIONAL DENTURE
If considering one of the full arch options, such as removable dentures, you may ask, what is the difference between an implant denture and a traditional denture? The difference is an implant denture is held or retained by implants placed and integrated into the jawbone, and unlike a traditional denture which require suction and sometimes denture adhesive. Therefore, Dental Implants create a foundation to retain the denture, improving its retention, thereby leading to a successful outcome. Other benefits to an implant retained denture, include them being secure and no need for dental adhesive, enabling you to eat, chew and speak without slipping or shifting, maximising comfort and boosting confidence.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FIXED BRIDGE & A REMOVABLE DENTURE?
Ultimately the main difference is, one is removable by the patient, and one isn’t. There is also a difference in cost, a fixed bridge being more of an expense. Overall, each boast multiple benefits in comparison to the other methods of traditional bridges and dentures. Both options offer a long-term solution to replacing missing teeth, providing patients with stability, maximising comfort and giving them confidence.
